Harvard Theological Review
Introduction
Harvard Theological Review is one of the oldest scholarly theological journals in the United States and has provided a forum for scholars of religion and theology since its founding in 1908. Issued quarterly, it publishes compelling original research that contributes to the development of scholarly understanding and interpretation in a variety of fields. Information about Article Content
Harvard Theological Review considers submitted articles for publication if they conform to the following guidelines:
Originality
Articles must not have been previously published elsewhere and must differ significantly and substantially from other material the author may have published. The Review does not consider articles currently submitted to other journals, nor articles which will be published later as part of a book.
Scholarly Content
The Review covers a wide spectrum of fields. Our main criterion for publication is that an article significantly advance knowledge in its field, be intelligible, and of interest to many of our readers. Rather than being polemical in tone, articles must be aimed at furthering knowledge. Furthermore, authors must adhere to recognized scholarly standards. That is, they must include full references and must be willing and able to work with primary sources in their original languages. The Review is non-denominational and does not seek to advance any particular viewpoint or opinion.
Book Reviews
Harvard Theological Review publishes review essays only occasionally. New books received in the office are, however, generally listed in a section at the end of each issue entitled "Books Received."
Survey of the Field
The Review accepts general survey articles in areas of scholarly discipline.
Translations
The Review occasionally accepts English translations of articles published in other languages, if they are considered to have wide appeal and are not readily accessible to the scholarly community.
Inclusive Language
The use of masculine pronouns when referring to persons generically and the use of such terms as "man" when referring to human beings should be avoided. The editors are aware that it is not always possible or appropriate to use inclusive language when referring to God or divine beings.
Address and Technical Details
Send two clean paper copies of a submitted article with text and notes double- spaced to:
Harvard Theological Review
Harvard Divinity School
45 Francis Avenue
Cambridge, MA 02138 USA
Or, send an electronic file of your paper via email attachment to: htr@hds.harvard.edu
We recommend, however, that you include a brief cover letter, introducing yourself and your topic either electronically or in print. Abstracts may be included.
The Review rarely publishes papers longer than about 40-50 double-spaced pages.
A copy of the HTR style sheet originally published in HTR 80:2 (1987), pages 243-60, and a brief outline of further changes in style will be mailed on request. The HTR style follows closely that of the Society of Biblical Literature Handbook of Style and the Chicago Manual of Style, published by Chicago University Press.
Authors will need to furnish the Review with an electronic version of their work, once an article has been accepted for publication.
How Articles are Reviewed
If, after an internal review process an article is deemed worthy of peer review, it is forwarded to one or more members of our independent board of consultants, someone who is especially qualified to assess a given article. The consultant's comments will be passed on to the author, whether or not the article is accepted. The review process generally takes 1-3 months. The Review does not return copies of rejected articles unless specifically requested to do so.
When an Article is Accepted
Accepted articles are generally published within six to nine months. During this time articles are edited for grammatical accuracy, felicity of writing, conformity with American spelling and usage, and accordance with the style sheet of the Harvard Theological Review.
Once the editing process is complete, authors receive page proofs electronically, which they are expected to read carefully and return to the office within the week. Authors may be asked to provide further bibliographic information.
After publication, authors are provided with twenty-five offprints of their published articles and one copy of the issue. Upon request further offprints and issues may be ordered.

Copyright of all articles published in the Harvard Theological Review is held by the President and Fellows of Harvard College. Authors receive no financial remuneration for publishing their work in the Review.
